There's a chill in the air where I live. Can you feel it too? That means winter is right around the corner. Mittens are such quick little projects and so practical too. The best part is that most of the time they only take one skein of yarn!
Have you ever wondered how to make crochet mittens? They're really not as hard as you might think! Most of them are worked in the round like hats or stuffed animals (although some are worked flat in rows and then sewn together!). You can make them with just about any stitch you can think up, but stitches that don't leave a lot of holes are the most suitable.

Tips for Crocheting these Free Crochet Mitten Patterns
Once you try mittens you will be hooked, no pun intended. I'm serious. From the moment I made my first pair I have loved them and have made many, many pairs as gifts.
Mittens can be made from the cuff up or from the top down. Here you will find projects that use both methods, and I can't say one is better than the other.
Personally, all the mittens I've designed use the bottom-up technique, but that isn't to say it's the best, it's just what I'm comfortable with.
With both methods, you will work the body of the mitten and the cuff before coming back to work the thumb. One thing I love about crochet is that there is no need to put the thumb stitches on a holder or waste yarn while waiting to come back to them!
What are the Best Yarns for Crochet Mittens?
Mittens are something that definitely needs a nice warm yarn. You wouldn't want a yarn that let in the cold!
Most of the time a wool or wool blend is used, but just be aware that some people are sensitive to wool, so if you are making your mittens as a gift, just be sure the recipient doesn't have a problem with wool. If so, choose a suitable alternative.
If you don't want to (or can't) use wool, you can use another animal fiber such as alpaca or you can go the acrylic route, which still works up quite nicely and has the added benefit of being machine washable, which could come in handy. (Haha… pun intended there!)
