How to Make Mittens Crochet

Looking for that perfect pair of mittens to crochet? Look no further than these free crochet mittens patterns, modern and sophisticated!

There's a chill in the air where I live. Can you feel it too? That means winter is right around the corner. Mittens are such quick little projects and so practical too. The best part is that most of the time they only take one skein of yarn!

Have you ever wondered how to make crochet mittens? They're really not as hard as you might think! Most of them are worked in the round like hats or stuffed animals (although some are worked flat in rows and then sewn together!). You can make them with just about any stitch you can think up, but stitches that don't leave a lot of holes are the most suitable.

You don't need to know any special stitches to make crochet mittens but it is fun to learn new crochet stitches on little projects like these. I curated this list of free crochet mitten patterns to include lots of different stitches, colors and looks. There's something for everyone!

Tips for Crocheting these Free Crochet Mitten Patterns

Once you try mittens you will be hooked, no pun intended. I'm serious. From the moment I made my first pair I have loved them and have made many, many pairs as gifts.

Mittens can be made from the cuff up or from the top down. Here you will find projects that use both methods, and I can't say one is better than the other.

Personally, all the mittens I've designed use the bottom-up technique, but that isn't to say it's the best, it's just what I'm comfortable with.

With both methods, you will work the body of the mitten and the cuff before coming back to work the thumb. One thing I love about crochet is that there is no need to put the thumb stitches on a holder or waste yarn while waiting to come back to them!

What are the Best Yarns for Crochet Mittens?

Mittens are something that definitely needs a nice warm yarn. You wouldn't want a yarn that let in the cold!

Most of the time a wool or wool blend is used, but just be aware that some people are sensitive to wool, so if you are making your mittens as a gift, just be sure the recipient doesn't have a problem with wool. If so, choose a suitable alternative.

If you don't want to (or can't) use wool, you can use another animal fiber such as alpaca or you can go the acrylic route, which still works up quite nicely and has the added benefit of being machine washable, which could come in handy. (Haha… pun intended there!)

1. 3 Hour Mittens

These modern mitts are made with super bulky yarn which gives you the best of both worlds – works up quick and is super warm and thick! You might be scratching your head when you look at this picture. Those look like they're knit not crochet! Nope! 2. Star Gazer's Mittens

One single skein of a fabulous gradient yarn gives you two of these marvelous mittens! There's no color changing which means less work for you (and less weaving in ends). You can make these mitts from the tip down using mainly half double crochet. The pretty textured detail on the cuffs comes from the star stitch which also happens to be the mittens' namesake.

3. Autumn Amore Mittens

You can make these easy crochet mittens using the moss stitch. The moss stitch is one of my very favorite easy crochet stitches. It's such a simple stitch – just alternating single crochet and chain stitches – but the effect when you change colors every round is so pretty! It reminds me of a houndstooth or a checkerboard pattern.

If you're intimidated by crochet cables (or just don't have time to learn right now) you can fake it til you make it with these fabulous faux cabled mittens. The main part of the mitten is made with all single crochet. You'll be working in the round and adding chain stitch loops as you go. At the end, these loops are linked together to form the "cables." You're sure to turn some heads with these totally textured mittens. These gloves are worked in the round from the tip down. The very tip is just single crochet and then the real fun begins. 7. Cozy Cluster Mittens

Sleek monochrome mittens are sure to stand out against sparkling white snow. Cluster stitches are a bit like bobble or popcorn stitches. There's lots of yarning over and pulling through multiple loops. Although instead of popping out, these cluster stitches stay flat. Don't you just love learning new stitches and making cozy mittens while you're at it?

If you know how to single crochet and double crochet then you can make these mittens! 9. Snowflake Mittens

Classic fair isle snowflakes are the perfect addition to your winter wardrobe. Tapestry crochet is one of my favorite techniques for making amazingly detailed images with just single crochet stitches. The nonworking color is carried along with you so you can pick it back up easily. That also means less ends to weave in for you!

12. Cable Twist Mittens

If working in the round isn't your style or you can never seem to get your seams to be straight, then why not trip a mitten pattern that's worked flat. Cable stitches are well worth the extra effort. They really give these twisted mittens that "wow" factor! The rest of the mitten is worked with half double crochet stitches to simplify things a bit.

You can hardly recognize the basic half double crochet stitches in these fabulous fuzzy mittens. The luxurious brushed alpaca yarn is wonderfully soft and fuzzy without being hard to work with. 14. Cute and Cozy Mittens

The spiked single crochet stitch puts a fun new twist on a classic crochet stitch for a whole new look! The moss stitch is made by alternating single crochet and chain stitches and spike stitches are made by working into the stitches from 2 rows below rather than the typical 1 row below. You can finish these cozy mittens off with a ribbed double crochet folded cuff.

15. Snowdrops Mittens

Alternating rows of half double crochet with star stitches make a wonderful contrast of textures for these brightly colored mittens. One cake of yarn is enough to make two sets of mittens so you can make one pair for you and one for a friend. They'll be similar but not identical because of the fun color-changing yarn.

16. Noelle Mittens

Here's another knit imposter pattern to add your favorites! Half double crochet in the third loop makes a wonderfully thick and stretchy fabric that resembles knitting with all it's little ridges. I often see this stitch used for a round or two on a stitch sampler style hat, but I absolutely love it here used for every row. It really does look like knit, doesn't it?

In today's world of texting and touch screens, mittens can be a bit impractical. This convertible pattern has a little finger cover that you can fold back if you need your digits free. Alternating double and treble crochet makes the delicate texture you can see. My favorite part is this bright mustard color perfect adding a pop of color to long, dark winter nights.

I guess I should add a little disclaimer here. Mittens are addictive crochet projects! Seriously, because they work up so quickly and with such a small amount of yarn it's hard to stop at just one pair. You're definitely going to want to save this page to your Pinterest or bookmarks so you can come back when you're ready to make another pair.

Did I mention that mittens make great last-minute crochet gifts for friends and family? Because they totally do! Another nice thing is that they are small and light so they won't be too spendy to send in the mail to loved ones that you won't get to see for the holidays this year.
